Much research has been done on foods that speed your metabolism, and this can be very beneficial for those looking for foods that can help with quicker weight loss. Many of us when out of shape or overweight do not have our metabolism at optimal rates, and some may even have metabolism disorders that can cause many health concerns.
Speaking to your doctor about your metabolism is very important if you have concerns. Often simply eating a healthy, well balanced diet can be beneficial in getting your metabolism back where it belongs. Those who often do dangerous fad diets or fasting excessively can actually do a lot of harm to their metabolism and can cause them to gain weight or make it more difficult for them to lose weight, not to mention many other possible health complications.
The best thing about the foods that are good for your metabolism is that they are not hard to find, they are not “weird”, and there’s a good chance you are eating them already, though probably not as much as you should be!
Here are some foods that are thought to boost and speed your metabolism:
Almonds: Almonds are great to top things such as yogurt with, they also make a great snack when you’re in the mood for something crunchy.
Apples: The almighty apple has plenty of nutritional benefits. It is also high in fiber.
Beans: Beans are a great thing to start eating more of. Black beans, kidney beans, navy beans, and even green beans are all good for you!
Berries: Berries are a wonderful food to pair with yogurt or eat as a dessert or snack.
Chicken Breast: Grilled chicken breast is a great source of protein and is typically very lean as well.
Eggs: Eggs are quite incredible and despite their bad press because of cholesterol (which is actually unproven according to the American Egg Board) eggs are a fantastic source of protein and also can help improve vision amongst other things.
Peanut Butter: Peanut butter is another great source of protein, and it goes along great with snacks or on whole grain bread.
Oats: Oats are found in many foods, and oatmeal paired can be a great easy nutritious breakfast to eat.
Spinach: Spinach is one of my personal favorite veggies – it goes great in anything! You can mix it with pasta, eggs, or even make a salad from it.
Salmon: Salmon is quite tasty and eating it 2-3 times a week may also actually help improve your mood because of its nutritional properties.
Steak: No red meat on a diet? Of course you can eat red meat once in awhile – and actually many experts now believe that once a week is more beneficial for you than not eating it at all!
Turkey: Turkey is another great source of protein, and it’s not just for Thanksgiving! Turkey sandwiches. Ground turkey can be used many ways as a substitute for ground beef. (See: Healthy Turkey Meatloaf Recipe)
Vegetables: Most of us do not eat enough vegetables, so simply eating more of any vegetable can be very beneficial for speeding your metabolism.
Water: The recommended amount of water to drink is 6-8 glasses per day. Are you drinking that much? Adding lemon can help immensely if drinking water is not your favorite thing.
Whey Protein: Whey protein powder is available in many grocery and health stores. You can use it to make shakes, add it to your other foods, and more. Just be careful not to overdo it on protein – depending on your height, weight, age, and gender, more than 38 grams of protein daily could cause problems such as kidney stones. (I had them once when I was pregnant with my son – NOT fun! Made childbirth seem like a breeze!)
Yogurt: Yogurt is a great source of dairy. Plain and sugar free yogurt is the most beneficial for you – but don’t worry you can mix it up with many things such as the berries and almonds we listed above!
