Sugar Craving Medication? Potatoes, Not Prozac.
It would be nice if such a thing existed as a sugar craving medication to stop sugar cravings, but as far as I know there is no such drug or supplement out there that is researched with scientific fact let alone FDA approval.
In our post 10 Ways How to Stop Sugar Cravings we talk about identifying if you are a sugar addict and what you can do to stop sugar cravings. With artificial sweeteners such as Splenda and Truvia many people find them as helpful “barely taste the difference” sugar substitutes.
What is interesting is that for some people unable to get their sugar cravings under control may actually end up having to take medications because of the negative impact of sugar on one’s health. For example, sugar can change your blood sugar, and if you’re blood sugar is all out of sync, it could possibly lead to diabetes. There are other problems sugar cravings can cause, including extreme fatigue, irritability, hyperactivity, and mood swings. These things, coupled with the usual daily stresses of life, can make many people fall into bouts of depression, anxiety, or other mood conditions where medication may be prescribed as a solution. Worse, one might turn to drugs or alcohol, something far more difficult to beat than sugar cravings.
If you’re concerned about sugar and the impact it may have on your emotional health, there’s a great book called Potatoes Not Prozac: Solutions for Sugar Sensitivity that might help you understand how sugar sensitivity can cause problems – both physically and emotionally. It’s an easy to read, easy to understand book that I was able to follow even while being constantly interrupted by my wonderful children every other page.
One of the best messages of the book is that it’s not about dieting – it’s about having a healthy relationship with your food and your body. It helps you understand what sugar addiction really is and ways to deal with it for good.
