What is the Acai Berry Diet?

I often read and hear about various diet fads, and today I thought after reading this article about acai berries that made me think I should run out and buy a ton of them and how they may help with weight loss, I thought I’d do a little more research for them.

Acai berries, which for awhile seemed to be completely unknown, have become wildly popular, probably due to its front page story on Yahoo a year or two ago and people wanting to try them and then after trying them liking them enough to tell family and friends about it. And then of course you always have the person who invents an acai berry diet…

Acai berries grow on palm trees and are similar to a grape in size and shape. While they are full of antioxidants which are good for you, they’re also full of natural fats, one of which is oleic acid, which has been linked to increased breast cancer risk.

However, the acai berry may have some positive affects, including better energy levels, increased sleep, better skin health, and many other claims to be a “miracle berry”.

There have been several studies based on the acai berry as well as studies done on the science of the components of the acai berry, but many are inconclusive or prove conflicting information, which doesn’t make any of the research seem to exceptionally reliable.

If you’re tempted to try the acai berry, there’s no harm in eating them in moderation in addition to your regular diet. Eating them in moderation in addition to a regular diet would mean for most people one serving 2-3 times a week. This helps ensure you’re not getting too much of the fats and other properties found in the fruit and also get the nutrients and benefits of other foods.

Eating insane amounts of the acai berry or taking acai berry supplements (often found in health stores as a powder or capsule) probably isn’t going to make you rapidly lose weight anymore than any other diet that makes you eat a certain food all of the time. You could actually lose weight by eating nothing but ice cream for three weeks – but that doesn’t mean its healthy or good for you! Again, a well balanced diet low in sugar and added fats as well as regular exercise is the best bet in losing weight safely and without it all coming immediately back after you discontinue a fad diet.
