With cookies, candy, and other goodies it can be tough to stay on track, so we’ve put together some holiday nutrition and weight control tips to make sure you don’t end up looking like Santa Claus come New Year’s.
Holiday Nutrition and Weight Control Tips
Eat Your Veggies: It’s easy to fill up on sweets and fattening foods, so instead of heading for the cookies, try to eat several full servings of veggies each day. If going to a party, why not offer to bring a veggie tray of peppers, broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower?
Exercise: Cold weather can make us feel a little sluggish and the December calendar is usually full, but its important that you continue exercising regularly. From ice skating to walking around your mall briskly to even going outside and sled riding there’s plenty of fun winter activities to keep you active and in shape.
Substitute, Substitute, Substitute!: If you’re baking or cooking for any occasion, remember to use whole grain flour, low and no-fat versions, and sugar substitutes such as Splenda. It will help cut out some of the calories and assist in weight control!
Eat Food Groups Together: Balancing the foods you eat is important. So make sure you eat from each food group each time you eat. By following this simple rule you’re much more likely to get the nutrition you need.
Limit alcohol intake: Alcoholic drinks are full of empty calories and sugar, so be sure to limit yourself anytime you go out. Opt for a diet soft drink or sparking water instead, or maybe even make non-alcoholic sugar free smoothies.
Take Time to De-Stress: The holidays can be a stressful time and can trigger over eating. Make sure you take a few time outs to relax. Avoiding stress isn’t always possible, but by exercising, meditating, or distracting yourself with something besides food can help you avoid gaining weight because of it!
