It can be difficult for many to afford the high cost of healthy foods. You can save a lot of money however by cooking from scratch and avoiding buying pre-made and pre-packaged foods. By doing this you can also experience additional savings by being able to purchase some items in bulk.

Here a few examples of ways you can prepare things from scratch and save money:

Buy the big container of sugar free yogurt: It is often tempting to buy the single serving yogurts available at the grocery store. However, you can often get a large container of generic brand plain yogurt for several dollars less. Pair this with fresh or frozen fruit and you can make your own yogurt snacks by putting it in small reusable serving containers.

Buy Low Cost Foods Like Eggs: While eggs have gone up considerably in price over the past few months, it is still often cheaper to buy a dozen of eggs than a box of cereal - and the eggs can be used in many different things. You can hard boil eggs a few days ahead of time to have a healthy snack on hand or for a quick breakfast on the go. Tuna is another great low cost food that you can incorporate into your meals.

Buy Ground Beef or Chicken on Sale: You can often find fantastic sales on meat if you watch the sales ads carefully at your local grocery store. If you buy a little more than you would need, you can freeze it and then thaw in advance for another time.

Buy Veggies on Sale and Freeze Them: I will often buy green peppers, spinach, or onions while on sale. After we use what we like fresh, I will chop or slice up and freeze for an easy way to add veggies into just about any meal.

Make your own Single Serving Snacks: Instead of purchasing the pre-packed single serving snacks, you can usually buy a larger quantity of the food and a bag of sandwich bags to make your own single servings.

Great tips! Sometimes with all the hype about egg prices you forget that it is still a cheaper way to go. Another great site for grocery saving tips and even making household recipes like laundry soap (great stuff!) is savemoneytoday.net.
