If you have a friend or family member who needs to lose weight, it can be difficult to know how to tell someone you love to lose weight. While you may be concerned about their weight gain and the effects of their weight on their health, you may also be worried you will offend them or that they will think you do not love them for who they are.

Losing weight can be a delicate subject with many. Nobody likes to be told they need to lose weight! Many overweight people are well aware they are overweight. (I know I was!) However, they may be feeling overwhelmed, helpless, or out of control.

Below are some tips for how to tell someone you love to lose weight:

1. Partner Up With The Person: Sometimes you can get away with convincing someone they need to lose weight without even talking to them about it. Tell them you want to start exercising and invite them to do it with you. Take them shopping with you for healthy foods. Attend a local workshop together. Just by asking them to be supportive of you and to do it together can help motivate them, even if you are not the one that needs to lose the weight!

2. Choose a Good Time to Talk: Talking to someone about their weight problem in front of others can be embarassing and uncomfortable. The person may also feel like you are all ganging up on them or are against them. Instead, choose a quiet time to tell someone you love to lose weight with minimal distraction or attention. Do not talk about it while eating food, since this will only make the person who needs to lose weight feel badly about themselves.

3. Be Positive: Saying things like “you are fat” or “you’re going to die from a heart attack” will not help you tell someone you love to lose weight. It will likely only cause an argument or disagreement or put distance between the two of you. Instead say, “I am worried about your health. I love you so much I want you to live as long as possible.” Focus on positive things – and before you discussion make a list of positive statements you can make.

4. Do Some Research First: It helps to know what diet options are available, and if you know the eating habits of the person you love you can help them find a diet you can both try together. If they hate to count calories like I did or do not want to spend the money to join a weight loss program, they may be interested in reading my ebook on how to lose weight for free. 5. Don’t Give Up: Some people will not be receptive of you telling them they need to lose weight at first. It could possibly take several attempts before finally convincing them it is time to lose weight. Be gentle and supportive each time, try to get actively involved with exercise and eating healthy, and continue to offer your help. At the same time, be sure it does not become a daily issue or a subject you bring up every single time you are together – the person you love will not be appreciative!

It can be difficult to tell someone you love to lose weight. Hopefully these tips will help you in deciding how to tell someone you love to lose weight and become a healthier, happier person.
